ENTEBBE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL PROFILE

Background

The name Entebbe, coming from the Luganda word ‘ntebe’ (chair), is derived from a few rocky seats where Mugula one of the Ganda Chiefs of the 19thCentury used to hold court.

  • 1879: Arrival of the first Catholic missionaries at Kigungu on the shores of Lake Victoria
  • 1893:  Sir Gerald Portal founded Entebbe as a military post and principal port to Uganda.
  • 1903: Declared a Township
  • Late 1940s: Declared a Town Council
  • 1959: 1st structural plan approved
  • 1975, Town Council was elevated to Municipality

Location

The Municipality lies at 00.04N, 320.28E and is 37 kilometers South of Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda. It is situated in Wakiso District one of the districts bordering Lake Victoria in the south. It is located on the peninsular into Lake Victoria covering an area of 56.2Sq Km of which about 20Sq km is water.

Administrative units

The Municipality has a number of administrative units. There are 2 Divisions A & B and each Division has 2 wards/parishes. The municipality has 24 sub-wards.

Population

According to the 2002 Population and Housing Census, the population of Entebbe Municipality stood at 55,086 persons (51% females and 49% Males) accounting for 6% of Wakiso District’s population. Entebbe’s population size has been increasing at an average annual growth rate of 2.2% implying that its 63,820 people according to the projection of 2009 and 69,700 people by the next census in 2013. With an area of 56.2 square kilometers and a population of 55,086 persons, Entebbe Municipality’s population density stood at 980 persons per square kilometer. (The national average is 124 persons per square kilometer).

The population increased by 50% from 1980 t0 1991 and by 22% from 1991 to 2002. The increase in population size is attributed to the Kampala urban spill and the rural to urban migration in search of employment opportunities.

CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

  • Entebbe Municipality experiences a bimodal type of climate with two rainy seasons between May-June and September-December while the dry season stretches from January to March/April.
  • Average rainfall of 18,200mm
  • Mean temperatures of 25.20C to 26.30C.

The crust is made of ferrosol soils and is located in a region producing coffee and bananas.

The Municipality is endowed with several natural resources and unique man-made features (a 70 acre botanical gardens established in 1898, a zoo-Uganda wildlife Education Centre) habituating a diversity of fauna and flora.

Tourism Facilities

  1.  Uganda Wild life Education Centre (UWEC) with a variety of animals including the lions, crocodiles, hippos, chimpanzees, monkeys, various snake varieties and bird species.
  2. Historical sites such as Entebbe Za Mugula, and the stunning sunset site at Nakiwogo landing site.
  3. Botanical Gardens with a variety of plant species from all over Uganda, Africa and beyond.
  4. The council put up leisure parks like the Muzinga Park, Children’s Park and Mayors’ Gardens.
  5. Sports facilities like the Entebbe Golf course, Kakeeka cricket grounds, swimming pools at several major hotels and several playgrounds.
  6. Hotels, Guest Houses, Campsites
  7. Daily ferry to Kalangala Island
  8. The Entebbe International Airport

Main Activities

The residents are engaged in a number of economic activities, which include:

  1. Public service.
  2. Trading.
  3. Fishing.
  4. Urban and peri-urban farming.
  5. Aviation related activities.
  6. Hotels & restaurants.
  7. Construction.

Council Core Functions

The Municipal council’s main function is to mobilize internal and external resources and within the existing regulatory framework direct the resources towards addressing the following services:

  1. Roads, Vehicle and plant management.
  2. Health services
  3. Water and sanitation
  4. Gender.
  5. Environmental concerns and recently council is shifting towards promoting the Town as a tourist destination.

Strategic initiatives.

  1. Entebbe Municipal Council was one of the Founders of The Lake Victoria Region Local Authorities Cooperation (LVRLAC).
